Elina's LOTR Project

One nice (or not so) evening, reserved for writing the World Literature 2 essay, I of course began to do everything but, such as listing names of persons, places etc. from The Lord of the Rings. Next I leafed through various dictionaries, encyclopaedias and atlases trying to find some explanations, or "links to reality" for the names. Probably at least most of those that I found have nothing whatsoever to do with Tolkien’s origins for the names but many are rather nice anyway. Furthermore, I guess there are more professional, more comprehensive and in every way better studies concerning this issue of Tolkien’s masterpiece. I haven’t yet read or even sought them, but at some point I certainly will. The main purpose (?) of this process was to offer me some nice pastime and entertainment, and after all, you got to have some excuse for not writing essays, maths portfolios and other fascinating stuff. (After some time cleaning one’s closets, vacuuming and arranging books and everything possible and impossible according to colour, size etc. tends to get somewhat boring..) I had fun with this project and I hope you have too when reading it. The names are mainly from the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers as well as from the map of Middle earth. Many names are missing from my list and that’s because I have missed them or, more probable, I haven’t found any nice or sensible explanations or connections for them. Possibly I add more findings later on. - Elina
