A skeptic's ramblings on Tarot I am intrigued by the symbolism, but even more intrigued by the sheer _art_ of "reading" the cards and then putting their meanings together into a coherent message or story or "life-guide". It's not simple as most people think, like "Ooh it's the hanged man, you're so screwed LOL noob" ( :D ) but it's a true form of art to be able to spin a convincing story out of these few pointers that are given to you. Most of the Tarot books and sites I've seen are pretty much - well, crap, since they all focus on the ooo-whoo-ooo-ooo-soo-mystical---foreboding--the-future-ooo--- insert-ghostly-sounds-here-whoooo -aspect - even though that is complete and utter BS as any sane person knows :D What they SHOULD focus on is the inspiration you can get from doing/getting yourself Tarot readings. The cards do NOT, by any (relevant, ie. scientifical ie. rational ie. valid) standard represent "The Truth" TM (c) but instead give you some really good grips or handholds or cornerstones on which to set new ideas. At their best, they help you to connect the old bits of information and knowledge you have in your head in completely new and fresh ways. They can give you insight into surprisingly deep issues, if you're open for the information. They can make you reflect on your current viewpoints and actions (and thus affect your future ;) ). And no, I'm _not_ saying that the Tarot is a somehow "better" way to do this inside-insight-thingy than by some other means, it's just one way - but certainly a pleasant way for anyone with a love for history, intertextuality, "the mythical" - and especially the graphic arts! :) | |
